Responsible for identifying the position of the crankshaft axle and the number of rotations of the crankshaft. The information obtained determines the injection, ignition, and other adjustment parameters through the ECU.
LOCATION
Located on a toothed wheel on the crankshaft’s own flywheel, on the flywheel, integral with the engine’s own crankshaft, etc.
TYPES
There are two types of sensors:
- Inductive/passive: the electric current generated by induction when it passes through the teeth in front the magnet which constitutes the inductive sensor, and which generates an alert signal.
- Hall effect /active: similar to the previous ones, but which are energized and alternate between different states as the teeth pass. Generally, it generates a square signal.
POSSIBLES FAULT SYMPTOMS
In case of fault in the crankshaft sensor, it can be reflected in:
- Motor fault
- Random engine stalls
- Lack of default accelerator responsiveness
