The thermostat housing accommodates the thermostat and, through its outlets, distributes water to both the radiator and the engine.
TYPES
- Some housings also incorporate heating pipes and distribute water to the heater radiator.
- Some thermostat housings have built-in temperature sensors. These sensors allow the temperature to be displayed on the control panel and activate the radiator fan.
LOCATION
Depending on the vehicle model, thermostats can be located either on the cylinder head or on the water pump.
CAUSES OF FAILURE
- Corrosion
- Dirt accumulation
- Coolant leaks
- Mechanical wear
FAILURE EFFECTS
- Malfunctioning thermostat preventing coolant from circulating from the engine to the radiator
- Failure in temperature sensors
- Deterioration of EPDM seals causing the vehicle to lose antifreeze and breaking the electric motor that moves the closing and opening valve.
