It’s a valve responsible for regulating the flow of coolant. It directs the coolant as needed by the vehicle, either toward the engine or the radiator, based on the liquid’s temperature.
LOCATION
Depending on the vehicle model, thermostats can be located either on the engine cylinder head or on the water pump.
FAILURE CASES
- Corrosion
- Dirt blockage
- Spring breakage
FAILURE EFFECTS
- The vehicle doesn’t maintain a stable temperature (never reaches operating temperature if stuck open) or overheats.
- If stuck closed, overheating can damage the engine.
- If stuck open, it increases fuel consumption and engine wear.
